Botox injections
Botulinum Toxin injections are manufactured by Allergan. It is a highly toxic substance which has the effect of temporarily paralysing the muscles at the site of injection. This effectively smooths out frown lines and other wrinkles. Botulinum toxin injections are safe to use if administered by a trained professional. Treatments generally take about 10 minutes, and the effects last for up to six months.

Botulinum toxin treatments are amongst the most common cosmetic procedures performed in South Africa.

Botulinum toxin injections softens these wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles but will not remove the lines. This is where Fillers are used to remove the wrinkles and the reason that Botulinum toxin injections and fillers are often used together.
This is not to say that everyone needs Botulinum toxin injections and Fillers. It is not necessary to use fillers where there are no lines after the underlying muscles have been relaxed. In these cases small regular doses of Botulinum toxin will keep the lines away.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers are sometimes called ‘liquid facelifts’. They can have a noticeable anti-aging effect without all the hassle and downtime of a surgical facelift. Dermal fillers are used to remove wrinkles and fine lines and plump the area around the lips. Dermal Fillers are low cost and very quick to do, however they must be regularly maintained as the effect is not permanent.
Lip Enhancement
Lip Enhancement is a very successful aesthetic procedure.
We use temporary fillers to define, enhance, rejuvenate and sometimes also to make them larger if indicated. It is an injection of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the tissues. It adds volume by drawing in water and also promotes collagen growth.
Lip enhancement/Augmentation generally lasts about 4 months as the lips are very mobile structures and results are noticeable immediately after treatment.
Dermal Fillers Prices
Fillers are reasonably priced, but the total cost will depend on the area to be enhanced. The average cost is R2,500 – R3,500 per treatment. Dr Padilha will assess your needs and recommend the optimal treatment to fit within your budget.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid Surgery, or Blepharoplasty, rejuvenates your upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both, smoothing away wrinkles and eliminating bagginess.
- Upper Blepharoplasty targets excess skin that is sagging or drooping which can make your eyes appear tired and heavy. In extreme cases, this skin may even cause problems with opening your eyes and can impact vision.
- Lower Blepharoplasty surgery improves the appearance of bags or loose skin under your eyes that make you look older and tired.
When should I consider Eyelid Surgery?
If you’re self-conscious about loose, excess or droopy skin around your eyes, feel that you look old and tired, the first step is to see a plastic surgeon for a consultation. However, a wide range of men and women are considered good candidates for this treatment.
Are you a candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
This is a deeply personal choice. Do it for yourself and no one else. You’ll be much happier with the end result if you have the procedure to please yourself. You must, however, have realistic expectations.
You may be a candidate if:
- You’re physically healthy.
- Have no current medical eye conditions
- Have no history of keloid scars
- Do not smoke
Spend time looking at eyelid surgery photos and understand what is expected during recovery. The more insight you have, the better you’ll recover and your expectations will be more realistic. If you have had any Botox injections, they must have completely worn off before you have any eyelid surgery.
What happens during eyelid surgery?
The length of the procedure depends on whether both the upper and lower eyelids are operated on and if it is done in combination with other procedures.
All blepharoplasty eyelid surgeries are performed under local or twilight anaesthesia – no general anaesthesia is necessary.
After surgery, small bandages or dressings are applied and you should be able to go straight home to recover. For the first 24 hours after surgery you will need to rest with your head slightly raised and use ice packs intermittently to relieve swelling and discomfort.
Are there any side effects?
Doctors have performed Blepharoplasties safely and effectively for many years. However, the treatment is a surgical procedure and involves careful post-surgical care. By following your doctor’s instructions, you’ll enjoy swift healing and minimal risks.
What to expect.
With any surgical procedure, it is important to understand that there are side effects. During the post-operative healing phase, you may experience swelling, bruising, pain, irritation and/or dry eyes.
Your doctor will discuss how to manage all these potential side effects during your consultation.
Downtime.
“Social” downtime for eyelid surgery is usually about 7 to 10 days. Once the stitches are removed (if used) your surgeon will evaluate how well your wounds are healing. At this point, the majority of swelling will have subsided and the only visible side effect will be redness around the surgical sites, which will lessen over time.
If everything is healing well, you will be allowed to resume your normal cleansing routine and ladies will be cleared to wear makeup again.
Recovery.
After the initial 7 to 10 day period, you will see more and more improvements over approximately 3 to 6 months as swelling reduces and incision sites fade.
You will be given very specific instructions for after care and adhering to these instructions will be vital to your overall results. Sun protection with sunglasses is a key step for avoiding hyperpigmentation scars.
Results.
The results are long-lasting. While eyelid surgery does reverse the effects of aging, nothing can stop it completely! You will continue to age after your surgery and your eyes are no exception. However, some patients have reported that they are still very pleased with their results as many as 7 years post-surgery.
