Breast augmentation, commonly known as a “boob job”, is the most performed cosmetic breast procedure worldwide, helping women restore volume, improve symmetry, and feel more confident in their bodies.
Advances in implant technology and surgical techniques mean every procedure can be personalised to suit your anatomy and desired outcome.
While the procedure itself is popular, understanding the recovery process is just as important as understanding the procedure itself.
Breast Augmentation with Dr FilipeWhat Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation is performed to increase breast size, improve shape and symmetry, and restore fullness where volume has been lost.
The procedure involves placing an implant through an incision made around the areola, beneath the breast fold, or under the arm. Depending on your anatomy and surgical goals, the implant is positioned either beneath the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle.
What Types of Breast Implants Are Available?
There are several types of breast implants available, including saline and silicone implants. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different body types and desired outcomes.
Choosing the right implant is about far more than simply selecting a size. Your height, body proportions, existing breast tissue and skin quality all play an important role in determining what will look and feel most natural. During your consultation, Dr Filipe will guide you through the options and recommend the most appropriate implant for your anatomy and goals.
Why Do Women Choose Breast Augmentation?
Women choose breast augmentation for many different reasons, including:
- Increase breast size.
- Restore volume that has been lost after pregnancy or weight loss.
- Improve breast symmetry.
- Reconstruct the breast following surgery.
Who Can Get a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is suitable for many women, provided they are healthy and have realistic expectations about the outcome.
Generally, good candidates are women who:
- Are in good overall health.
- Maintain a stable weight.
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do not smoke.
- Have realistic expectations about the procedure and results.
A consultation with Dr Filipe is the best way to determine whether breast augmentation is right for you.
What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia.
An incision is made in the planned location before the implant is carefully positioned either beneath the breast tissue or the pectoral muscle.
Once the implant is in place and symmetry has been assessed, the incisions are closed and the recovery process begins.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
Yes. Modern breast implants are extensively researched, FDA approved, and considered safe when used appropriately.
Like any medical device, implants are not designed to last forever. While many women enjoy their implants for many years without complications, some may require revision surgery due to changes in the breast, implant-related concerns, or personal preference.
Your surgeon will discuss the potential risks, benefits and long-term considerations during your consultation.
Will I Need Another Procedure in the Future?
Ultimately, yes. Although modern breast implants are highly durable, they are not intended to last forever. The lifespan of an implant varies depending on the type of implant used and individual factors.
In addition to the implants themselves, your breasts will naturally continue to change due to ageing, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and gravity. Some women choose revision surgery years later to replace their implants or restore breast shape, while others may go many years before considering another procedure.
How Long is The Recovery Process?
Recovery is different for every patient, but understanding what to expect can help you prepare.
Immediately after surgery, you will receive medication to manage any discomfort and will need someone to drive you home.
Your first follow-up appointment will be scheduled shortly after the procedure.
Swelling is normal and generally begins to settle within the first two weeks, although the breasts will continue to soften and settle over the following months.
Dissolvable stitches typically disappear within six weeks. If drainage tubes or non-dissolvable sutures are used, these will be removed by your surgeon.
For at least six weeks, strenuous upper-body movement should be avoided. Heavy lifting should be limited for around three months, while swimming is generally postponed for up to six months, depending on your healing. After that, you should begin to exercise moderately to regain strength in the upper body.
Is There Anything Special About Recovery That I Should Know?
Every patient’s recovery is unique. Following your surgeon’s advice is one of the most important factors in achieving the best possible outcome.
Whether it is caring for your incisions, wearing a supportive surgical bra, or gradually returning to normal activities, your aftercare plan is designed specifically for you.
